Abstract

Communication via Language is the wheel that drives effective counselling session all over the world. In Nigeria especially, the language of national, social cohesion, education and counselling is English. It is worthy of note that the adoption of the English language as the nation’s official language is occasioned by history of colonization by the British. So English language, since entrenchment, has been co-existing with over 450 indigenous languages; whereas, only three major indigenous languages are given recognition. Not only that, they are committed to writing; but are not given the status of the nation’s official language. Therefore, for efficient counselling session, it becomes a necessity for the counsellor to navigate the English language being in L2 linguistic situation.
