Abstract

In this study, researchers want to examine the level of effectiveness of using emoji in digital communication, the purpose of this
study is to analyze the effectiveness of using emoji features provided by digital media such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, or
Telegram applications. To create it, ordinary users use a combination of punctuation and emoticons. This is only valid in a textbased message exchange container. This study uses the uses and gratifications theory. This theory explains that media users have an active role to choose and use a media as an intermediary for the delivery of information needs. The uses and gratification
theory assumes that users have alternative choices to meet their needs. In addition to using a survey method with questionnaires as a data collection tool, in this study the researchers also made observations or direct observations of the habits of people using emojis in social media. Researchers also took references from several journals that discussed the use of emoji in communication and the effectiveness of emoji in expressing emotions to convey messages. Based on research that has been done, the use of emoji in aconversation or an expression in digital communication can significantly affect a person’s perception. This influence is able to increase the level of effectiveness of digital communication. Even though it’s not easy to make the same perception between two people, using this emoji can help reduce the chances of misunderstanding. Through this research, it is proven that the use of emoji is able to have an influence on the communication process.
