Abstract

Poverty and environmental degradation are an interesting social issue to discuss because they relate to our daily lives. Poverty and environmental degradation are interesting to study and examine more deeply using a sociological perspective because they relate to society or the social environment. Indonesia is known as a densely populated country and is listed as the fourth most populous country in the world. In addition, Indonesia is also in the list of the 100 poorest countries in the world based on the calculation of Gross National Income (GNI), to be precise, Indonesia is ranked 73rd in 2022. The purpose of writing this article is to find out how population density can affect poverty and degradation. environment and to understand more deeply about poverty and environmental degradation. It is hoped that with this article the reader can understand more deeply about poverty and environmental degradation and can understand the relationship between the two. The method used in this study is a qualitative method and the results of this study are described descriptively so that it is easy to understand. The results of this study are population density can affect poverty and environmental degradation because these three things are interconnected and have a causal relationship. Population density causes poverty because the increasing number of people causes more and more workers then causes more unemployment and causes humans to exploit nature because of insufficiency in meeting the needs of life. Insufficient in meeting the necessities of life encourages humans to exploit nature or the surrounding environment in order to maintain their survival, causing environmental degradation. Vice versa, environmental degradation can also cause poverty.
