This research is how the experience of cheating affects the perception of other people's infidelity. Using character vignettes,
we explored the hypothesis that participants' experiences of cheating on partners and character vignettes differed perceptions
of infidelity by gender (that is, men reported more accepting attitudes toward infidelity than women). Participants (N =
320) were asked questions explaining how 'acceptable' and 'forgivable' infidelity was the character sketch. Men and
women with previous cheating experiences found honesty-based characters of the same sex significantly more acceptable
and forgiving than unfaithful characters of the other sex. Participants who reported no history of infidelity found infidelity
generally unacceptable, regardless of the gender of the character.
