The increasingly rapid advances in technology have also encouraged the development of artificial
intelligence systems or what is commonly known as AI (Artificial Intelligence). Chat GPT is present
as an AI technology that has many advantages, one of which is in the education sector. In the
learning context, the use of Chat GPT can contribute to increasing learning effectiveness by
providing access to information and material that is broader and easier to understand. This
research aims to identify the effectiveness of using Chat GPT in completing essay assignments,
especially for students at Surabaya State University majoring in Communication Sciences. The
research method used is a quantitative descriptive approach using data collection techniques
through questionnaires. The respondents in this research were active students of the Bachelor of
Communication Science Study Program at Surabaya State University. Using GPT Chat can help
Surabaya State University students in completing assignments such as essays. Starting from
searching for information, answers and composing sentences, thus allowing users to be more
productive in completing their tasks. However, if Chat GPT continues to be used it can cause
dangerous dependency. People can lose writing, research, or problem-solving skills by relying too
much on these technologies.
