Abstract

The Sayan tradition is a mutual cooperation activity in the community to help build the house of
one of the villagers without financial reward, based on the principle of reciprocity. The Sayan
tradition in Javanese society is a means to increase solidarity between residents. The people of
Cangkring Hamlet still carry out this tradition until now. The Sayan tradition is believed to be a
form of a strong sense of kinship between members in the community. The purpose of this study
is to identify, understand and describe the role of the sayan tradition in maintaining community
solidarity carried out in Cangkring Hamlet every time there are residents who will build a house.
This research uses a qualitative approach with the aim of describing the role of social solidarity
contained in the Sayan Tradition. Data collection techniques were conducted with in-depth
interviews, and literature studies, then analyzed using Emile Durkheim's social solidarity theory.
The results showed that the Sayan Tradition in Cangkring Hamlet is a real expression of the
concept of social solidarity, as expressed by Emile Durkheim. The Sayan tradition acts as a social
glue to achieve stability in human relations, social harmony, and becomes a solid foundation for
unity and solidarity between residents. By maintaining the Sayan tradition, people not only form
a strong, harmonious and loving community, but also protect their cultural roots, care for their
ancestral heritage and ensure that these traditional values continue to be applied in daily life.
