Abstract

martphone users definitely use one of them to chat online or chat. Applications that can be
used to chat online or chat are WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Line, Telegram, and many
more. In sending chat activities, most users add emojis to their conversations. Emoji is the
Japanese term for picture characters or emoticons used in Japanese electronic messages and
Web pages. It originally meant pictograph, a literal word meaning “picture” + “letter”. The
current use of emojis aims to beautify and emphasize the meaning of the chat being
discussed by the user. However, for the majority of users who are young people, they use
emojis that have distorted meaning or do not match what the user feels. The author compiled
this research to find out how many online chat users do this. And the author wants to know
why users use emojis that change their meaning. The method the author uses is qualitative
by interviewing several students who use online chat. The results of this research show that
the majority of young people agree and admit that they as online chat users always actively
use emojis in online chats and also reverse the meaning of theseemojis. This journal
contains the meaning of emoji, problems in using emoji, and the meaning ofthe reversal of
the meaning of emoji from the majority of users who are young people.
