Abstract

Being a newcomer from one area to another with a different culture, the ability to communicate becomes the most important factor in
environmental adaptation. It is also a support for the success of socializing and studying. This article discusses the phenomenon of culture shock
experienced by new studentsin theCommunication Science undergraduate study program class of 2023 who migrated to study at Surabaya
State University (UNESA) and their adaptation process in the city of Surabaya. Culture shock is a feeling of shock and awkwardness that
individuals experience when they suddenly move to an environment with a different culture and basic behavior. Adaptation, on the other hand,
refersto the process of individuals adjusting to the demands, changes, and customs of a new environment. Through adaptation, the culture
shock phenomenon can slowly disappear and turn into a new habit. This article aimsto provide insight into the phenomenon of culture shock
and discuss adaptation strategies that can help new overseas students overcome these challenges. The interview process was conducted over four
days in September 2023. The interviews were conducted with 4 new students from different clas ses in the Communication Scienc e Undergraduate
Program at Surabaya State University. Culture shock raised is about cultural differences, especially in language. Javanese language in Surabaya
has its own words and accent. In addition, this article will review the lifestyle of the new students
