Abstract

The development of the film industry today is increasingly massive. Marked by the number of films that have appeared,
one of which is the film Miracle in Cell No. 7. This film is a film based on the true story of a South Korean citizen in
1972. The film, which was released in 2013 in South Korea, has attracted a lot of attention from film lovers in South
Korea and even other countries. The film tells about the struggle of a father as a single parent with a disability who receives
discrimination and unfair treatment by the laws of his country. Within a month of its premiere, the film has attracted 10
million viewers. Therefore, this film becomes interesting to study. This study uses a qualitative method with a semiotic
approach which intends to analyze the representation of what is experienced by the research subject. The focus of this
research is how to interpret the sign of the role of a father with a disability that appears in the film as an audio-visual
form. The results of this study conclude the meaning of the struggle of a father with a disability who gets discrimination
and injustice in the community in the film Miracle In Cell no. 7 which is represented through several film scenes about
the environment, humanity, behavior, character/characterization, and implied meanings.
