Abstract

Creativity and character are among the essential twenty-first-century competencies and constitute key educational goals in Indonesia. Therefore, both competencies should be systematically integrated into student textbooks at the elementary school level. In Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial (IPAS, Integrated Natural and Social Sciences), creative thinking is conceptualized as a series of cognitive processes that generate creativity, which is manifested through students' science process skills. Meanwhile, character competence is reflected in the development of scientific attitudes cultivated through the acquisition of these process skills. However, before these competencies can be effectively developed, learners' attention serves as a fundamental prerequisite for successful learning. A preliminary field study involving 169 fifth-grade elementary school students identified significant challenges in IPAS learning related to creative thinking and scientific attitudes. The initial assessment of creative thinking revealed that the proportions of students achieving a score of 3 were 19.52% for Fluency 1, 17.70% for Fluency 2, 20.11% for Flexibility, and 16.56% for Originality. Furthermore, questionnaire results indicated that only 28.99%, 23.07%, 27.21%, and 14.20% of students consistently demonstrated the scientific attitudes of curiosity, willingness to speculate, perseverance, and resilience, respectively. These findings indicate that both creative thinking skills and scientific attitudes remain at a relatively low level. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop student textbooks as instructional resources that effectively foster learners' attention while simultaneously promoting creative thinking and scientific attitudes in IPAS learning.
