Abstract

This study examines the Lidah Api Padas Gempal motif at Batik Srigaya Kediri as both a cultural visual system and a basis for sustainable batik design innovation. The study is grounded in the issue that while their visual structures and symbolic meanings as foundations for sustainable design development are rarely documented systematically. A descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach was employed, focusing on the Lidah Api Padas Gempal motif produced by Batik Srigaya Kediri. Data were collected through visual observation, motif documentation, semi structured interviews, and literature review. The data were analyzed through visual structure analysis and Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic semiotics to identify the relationship between representamen, object, and interpretant. The findings reveal that the motif is organized through upward curving flame forms, large floral ornaments, butterflies, and padas gempal isen that construct a coherent composition and symbolic narrative of energy, growth, transformation, and strength. The study concludes that visual semiotic analysis can support sustainable batik design innovation by preserving local cultural identity, strengthening product differentiation, and providing a conceptual foundation for adaptive design development in the creative industry.
